Bengaluru or Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka, a Southern state of India. The city is located at a height of 3113 ft. above sea level. The city is blessed with tropical savanna climate having distinct dry and wet seasons. Legend goes that the city got its name from ‘Bendha Kaalu’ which in local Kannada language means boiled beans. Once King Veera Ballala of Vijayanagara lost his way in the forest. Tired and hungry he found a hut where he met an old woman. He asked for food and she gave him boiled beans. To commemorate this incident he gave the place the name “Bendha Kaalu Ooru” (place of boiled beans). According to state historians the transliteration of the original spelling is Bengaluru, hence the city was renamed as ‘Bengaluru’.

Dargah Hazarath Tawakkal Mastan, a Muslim shrine is located in Cottonpet. This is the tomb of Sufi Saint, Tawakkal Mastan, which attracts both Muslim and non-Muslim pilgrims. Jumma Masjid is probably the oldest mosque in Bengaluru. It has a nice structure with tall ornamented granite pillars and elevated prayer hall. St. Mary’s Church was established by a French missionary Abbe Dubois. It is the only church in Karnataka state which has been elevated to the status of minor Basilica. During the Virgin Mary’s festival, which is celebrated every year in the month of September, people of all faiths take part in the procession.
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is one of the country’s best research institutes. It was conceived by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in the 19th century. Initially it had two departments namely General and Applied Chemistry and Electro-Technology. Later on, several new areas of research were established, many of them for the first time in India.
