The Majestic Taj Mahal
Standing on the bank of River Yamuna is the magnificent Taj Mahal. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Taj Mahal is the mausoleum of King Shah Jahan’s wife Mumtaz Mahal. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur after giving birth to their 14th child. After her death King Shah Jahan started the construction of Taj Mahal in 1631. The Taj Mahal was completed in 1653 at a cost of 32 million rupees. Shah Jahan’s grave was added to it later. It is made up of white marble and changes its shades with the sun light. To build the Taj Mahal, workers were brought in from all over India and central Asia. Taj Mahal is a symbol of love and is visited by millions of people every year from all over the world.
The visiting hours for Taj Mahal are sunrise to sunset. Taj Mahal remains closed on every Friday for visitors. The beauty of Taj Mahal on moonlit nights increases manifolds and leaves one mesmerized and in awe of its sheer shine like a Pearl. No words can describe its true beauty. The night visit of Taj Mahal is limited to 400 visitors per night between 20:30 to 00:30 hours. The duration of visit of 30 minutes per batch.
Other places to see in Agra
The Red Fort, also called as Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri are two other world heritage sites in Agra. The construction of Agra Fort was started with an intention to build a fortress. It was during the reign of King Akbar that this was converted into a palace but the beautification was done during the reign of his son Shah Jahan. Later Shah Jahan was kept there as a prisoner by his son and he died in the fort. The Taj Mahal can be viewed from the Red Fort.
Mathura and Vrindavan are the places that can also be visited during your visit to Agra. These cities are among the major pilgrimage places for Hindus and are associated with Lord Krishna.
